First, some musical accompaniment…

If we’re going to be discussing a bunch of beers with names like Noel, it’s important to get into the festive spirit. Through the web, we can’t provide an olfactory or gustation experience, but we can set the mood auditorily.

Winter Beer Season

As beer seasons go, winter beers (and most especially Christmas beers) have what’s probably the tightest window. Spring beers show up in February and stay on tap until May. Summer beers might appear in April and are available through August. Fall beers appear in August and remain popular through Thanksgiving. Winter beers are lucky if they’re on the shelves in November and are getting pushed out by February. Christmas beers have an even tougher go of it. You’ll get funny looks eating a candy cane in January…and the perception taints the beer world too.

Fortunately, with Norey’s Winter Beer Tap Takeover, we’re not expecting the nine beers we’re tapping December 9th to make it to the New Year.

The Nine Beers We’re Tapping

TO ØL Barrel-Aged Snowball Saison

Enough heavy dark obnoxious sweet super malty x-mas and winter beers. When you eat heavy duck with fat gravy, the last thing you want is another heavy sweet malt liqour!

NO! you want something that can help you sink the dinner, ease you stommach and cleance your throat. And that is exactly what Snowball Saison will do. It is a SUPER sparkling crisp and dry Saison that has been after fermented with milk acid bacterias and dry hopped over and over to give the beer a crisp and smooth tart finish (not to mention…. there is a lot of hops of course…)

De Dolle Stille Nacht

Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is a prestige beer from De Dolle Brouwers, brewed for Christmas. It has a very potent beer (12% ABV). It has been boiling for many hours, brewed with pale malt with white candy sugar in the kettle. The Nugget hops gives an extra bitterness to balance the extreme sweetness due to the density. The taste triangle is completed with some acidity of the fermentation. It is a very interesting beer to age. We have samples of every bottling we have done so far and aging hasn’t decreased the quality of this beer. Keep some samples at 10°C and mark the year on the cap with an alcohol marker. Cheers!!

Mikkeller Hoppy Lovin’ Christmas

A Christmas IPA brewed with ginger and pine needles.

Style: IPA

ABV: 7.80%

Delirium Noel

Alcohol volume: 10% ABV
Colour and sight: chestnut amber. A fine, white, creamy and lacing foam.
Scent: A complex entity of caramel malt, fruit, spices and the sweetness of the alcohol.
Flavour: A strong presence of alcohol, very spicy, slightly bitter. The aftertaste is sweet, spicy and slightly bitter.

HaandBryggeriet Bestefar

‘Bestefar’ is the Norwegian word for Grandfather. In this case, it refers to the Father of Father Christmas, or ‘Nissefar’ as he is known in Norway. Bestefar is the perfect companion for a cold winter night, spent contemplatively in front of a fire or for those fireside moments that are a bit more ‘festive’. It is complex, a little bit wild…and it might just be the best by far!

“Belgian strong ale with the good old taste from when all the farms used to brew their own beer. A dark strong ale, well balanced and full of malty and fruity flavors. We make living beer, not pasteurized nor filtered.”

The Bruery 7 Swans-A-Swimming

7 Swans-A-Swimming is the 7th beer in our “12 Days of Christmas” series. For this verse of the story, we chose the path we don’t often take – we brewed to style. No bells, no whistles, just our best take on the Belgian Quadrupel style. Brewed with nothing but water, malt, yeast, hops and a bit of Belgian dark candi sugar, this beer may not be as out-of-the-box as some of our past winter brews, but it’s just as tasty. Rich and complex, this robust dark ale juggles notes of raisin bread, dried apricots, burnt caramel and roasted pecans. The sweet flavors provide a full body and the bright yeast wafts the sweet holiday notes out of the glass, into your life. 7 Swans-A-Swimming is a perfect holiday sipper. Delicious right now, but suitable for aging up to 5 years, upon the release of 12 Drummers Drumming.

Mikkeller Santa’s Little Helper

A dark strong Belgian ale brewed with: water, malt (pale, special-B and chocolate), flaked wheat, dark candy syrup, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings), spices (orange peel and coriander seed) and ale yeast. This year’s version of Santa’s Little Helper is a real winter warmer. It is inspired by the Belgian Christmas beers, known for their thick warming body, light spices and balanced hop profile. Orange peel and coriander seed gives, along with the extreme fermentation temperatures, a massive mix of fruity nuances, which makes SLH07 an orgy of aromas and flavours. Merry Christmas!!

Le Baladin Noel is brewed in the tradition of an ancient winter warmer. A strong complex beer that will keep you warm during the cold months of winter and accompany any festivities.

Le Baladin Noel’s is an ale with an incredible complexity of aromas: flowery of rose, hint of dried fruits, caramel tasting, banana, cherry, plum, toffee, cocoa, licorice and peppery notes. Excellent with black chocolate, a glass of Noel is perfect for a special night.

Scaldis Noël

During the Holiday season, it is customary in Belgium to brew a bolder beer as a holiday gift to loyal patrons. At an impressive 12.5% ABV, one little Scaldis Noël bottle contains a great and impressive beer. It has a burnished ruby-copper color and a spicy aroma with notes of caramel and marzipan. With hints of anise, the beer has a long warming finish. Brewed in limited volumes, this Dubuisson offering has become a classic beer for the holidays and New Year’s celebrations.

Fall is in the air and here at Norey’s, that means it’s cider season! What better way to kick it off than with a cider tap takeover?

Starting at 4pm, there will be six ciders on tap from around the country and from around the world!

From the blossom, to the bee, to the pollinated tree, B-Cider is a delicate blend of cider with honey that gives you an opportunity to drink the full circle of life on the orchard. The apple trees need the bees for pollination, the bees need the apple trees for sustenance, and we need both to make this floral and aromatic cider.

Rum-Barrel-Aged Grand Banks

For the second offering in our Grand Banks series, we age a blend of ciders in recently emptied Bully Boy Distillers rum barrels for 10 months. The result is a rich combination of apple acidity, dark fruit, barrel, caramel, vanilla, with a pretty big kick of booziness in the rum forward finish.

Typical Asturian cider. Starting from autochthonous apples picked in selected apple orchards for their best agronomic conditions. We elaborate this natural cider using the traditional ways and methods.

    • Color: Ambar-like yellow.
    • Smell: Of mature apple, fresh and clean.
    • Flavor: Balanced, with body and tasty. Good composition of tannins that leave a nice sensation of dryness in mouth. Dry and refreshing. Behavior in pouring: Correct holding and perfect breaking. The presence of sediments in the bottom of the bottle may be normal for being elaborated without any kind of filtration process. It is recommended the turning upside down of the bottle and shake to break the possible sediments.
    • Temperature of serving: 14º C
    • Alcohol: 6,5%.

 

 

Norey’s LOVES sour beer. Rhode Island gets to pucker up for another Craft Beer Tap Takeover of Sour Beer at Norey’s in Newport!

Last year we held the Sour Beer Tap Takeover with TWENTY sours. Expect a similar number this year. We’re still in the process of finalizing this years beer list, but have no fear; if you’re a sour beer aficionado, you’re going to be very, very pleased. We doubt you’ll be able to find this much liquid wild yeast in New England, possibly the entire Northeast.

We’ve always got some on tap and PLENTY in bottles. But sometimes we like to go REALLY sour. How sour?

On Friday, July 15th, Norey’s is tapping six beers from Japan’s craft beer brewery, Hitachino Nest.

The 33rd Annual Black Ships Festival is taking place in Newport from July 14-17. Norey’s is celebrating with a tap takeover of Japanese craft beers from Hitachino Nest Beer.

Hitachino Nest was founded in 1823 as a sake brewery. Fast forward to 1994 and Japan reduced regulations regarding brewing beer, creating an opportunity which Hitachino seized upon. In 1996, they started producing Hitachino Nest Beer.

Today they produce thirteen regular beers which are available around the world.

The Newport Black Ships Festival is celebrating its 33rd year.

The Black Ships Festival commemorates the historic achievements of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, USN, of Newport, Rhode Island. The “Black Ships,” or “Kurofune,” refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships which, with one exception, were excluded from Japan for two hundred years until 1854. Commodore Perry negotiated the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854, the first treaty between the United States and Japan, thus ending two centuries of Japanese isolationism. The Black Ships Festival celebrates the signing of the treaty, which brought the two countries together as trading partners.

The tap takeover will feature six craft beers from Hitachino Nest (which are still being finalized).

Beers brewed by monks to fund their monasteries are doing double-good-duty this weekend at Norey’s.

Trappist beers have long been world-renowned as some of the finest beers ever brewed. This Memorial Day Weekend, Norey’s will have ten different Trappist beers on tap and those drinking can take comfort in the knowledge that part of the money they spend will be going to Clean Ocean Access, a local non-profit dedicated to ensuring clean beaches and waters.

Monastery brewhouses, from different religious orders, have existed across Europe since the Middle Ages. From the very beginning, beer was brewed in French Cistercian monasteries following the Strict Observance. For example, the monastery of La Trappe in Soligny already had its own brewery in 1685. Breweries were later introduced in monasteries of other countries as the Trappist order spread from France into the rest of Europe. The Trappists, like many other religious people, originally brewed beer to feed the community, in a perspective of self-sufficiency. Nowadays, Trappist breweries also brew beer to fund their works and charitable causes. Many of the Trappist monasteries and breweries were destroyed during the French Revolution and the World Wars. Among the monastic breweries, the Trappists were certainly the most active brewers. In the last 300 years, there were at least nine Trappist breweries in France, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, one in Germany, one in Austria, one in Bosnia and possibly other countries.

Trappist beers are the origin of the “Belgian-style” beers which have become extremely popular as the United States has embraced higher-end beers. The styles will be familiar to most craft beer drinkers. Dubbels, Tripels and Quads give beer drinkers a less-bitter alternative to IPAs, while they tend to be higher in ABV that macro-brews.

Spencer Trappist Ale

Famous for being both the newest Trappist Brewery and the only one located in the United States, the Spencer Brewery is affiliated with the St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. The monks pledged to only make one beer in the first five years of operation and Norey’s will have this 6.5% abv Blonde Ale on tap.

Chimay Premiere, Grand Reserve & Cinq Cents

Chimay is possibly the most widely-known Trappist brewery in the world and its beers may be better known by their label colors than their actual names. Chimay is located at the Scourmont Abbey in Chimay, Belgium.

Premiere (Red)

The Chimay Première is the brewery’s oldest beer and has a coppery color and sweet, fruity taste making this dark ale particularly tasty. It comes in at 7% abv.

Grand Reserve (Blue)

The Chimay Grande Réserve is a dark ale with a powerful aroma and complex flavor. This 9% abv heavy hitter will be available Friday night at 156 Broadway.

Cinq Cents (White)

Chimay’s triple, with its golden hue, offers a rare balance of mellowness and bitterness and a stronger 8% abv.

La Trappe Isis’or, Quad & Bock

Isis’or

Amber in color and featuring spicy, floral and fruity notes, this 7.5% Belgian strong pale ale was brewed to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Our Lady of Koningshoeven Abbey and is named after the abbey’s first brewer.

Quad

The La Trappe Quadrupel is a big 10% abv beer introduced 25 years ago. It has a rich, warming and intense flavor; Malty with notes of sweet persimmons and caramel.

Bock

With hints of vanilla, caramel and roast chocolate, this beer’s fruity aroma is a fine match for its malty, caramel flavor and 7% abv.

Stift Engelszell Gregorius & Benno

Stift Engelszell is Austria’s only Trappist brewery and brings its own style to the brewing process.

Gregorius

With a deep dark chestnut color and an aroma of chestnut, cashew and honey, this big 10.5% abv beer brings flavors of chestnut, honeycomb, licorice, mocha, cocoa, raisin, sour cherry, and eucalyptus, while wine yeast brings sweet and sour notes.

Benno

Lighter than the Gregorious, Benno is a fruitier beer coming in at 6.9% abv and has aromas of tangerine, slate, tropical fruit, apricot jam and amaretto, while the drinker may experience flavors of sourdough, cherry and white grape flavors with a hint of mint.
